A pub walk from the Royal Standard of England in the small hamlet of Forty Green, Buckinghamshire

This Week's Pub Walk... from the Royal Standard of England in the small hamlet of Forty Green, Buckinghamshire

The Royal Standard of England, a traditional country pub featuring in The Good Pub Guide, is hitting the news again. After its success as a double winner at last year's event, it has now been short-listed in four categories this year for the Publican Food and Drink Awards 2008:

- Food Pub of the Year
- Classic Food Pub of the Year
- Speciality Beer Pub of the Year

Now would be a great time to try one of the Royal Standard of England pub walks as this already excellent contender may well be trying even harder to please - they will need to be ready for surprise visits from The Publican as they select their overall winners for each category.

Forty Green is a small hamlet surrounded by ancient beech woodlands, grazing pasture and quiet country lanes and great birdwatching territory. Combine that with a friendly, award-winning pub and you have perfect ingredients for a great pub walk.

Around the Broads to The Bear and Bells, Beccles Marsh, Suffolk

This Week's Pub Walk... around the Broads to The Bear and Bells, Beccles Marsh, Suffolk

This Bear and Bells Pub Walk around Beccles Marsh takes in a haven for wildlife and is one of three way-marked trails, following the River Waveney for much of its route. We like the 4 mile Green Trail but there are various routes and starting points so you can do a shorter distance if you prefer.

The Bear & Bells is 5 minutes from The Quay, adjacent to the bus station, and its welcoming interior and good food have earnined it recognition in the Lucky Dip section of The Good Pub Guide. Plus it has regular guest ales for the real ale lovers too, featuring in The Good Beer Guide..

2-for-1 Meal on The Black Horse Inn Pub Walk, Nuthurst, West Sussex

This Week's Pub Walk... 2-for-1 Meal on The Black Horse Inn Pub Walk, Nuthurst, West Sussex

If you fancy an afternoon pub walk in Sussex this weekend, why not try a Black Horse Inn Pub Walk at Nuthurst and benefit from their 2-for-1 dining offer which ends on 5 October.

This 17th Centruy freehouse is offering the cheapest meal free as part of the 2008 Horsham and District Food and Drink Festival which is all part of British Food Fortnight. The Black Horse offers home-cooked, locally sourced food plus a selection of real ales and has a large woodland beer garden and stream.

Remember to download a copy of the festival program which contains full details of the offer. Note that you must take this with you, book 24 hours in advance and that the offer does not apply to weekend lunch times. However an afternoon walk finishing with an early evening meal outside could be just the ticket!

Choose between Black Horse Pub Walk (1) offering an enjoyable, easy going walk mostly through woods and across farm land or the longer Black Horse Pub Walk (2) with its views over the Northern Downs.
