New Book - "Waterside Pubs" is perfect for pub walkers

It is such a pleasure to find a gem of a book like Waterside Pubs that leads you to tucked away pubs that you would be unlikely to ever discover by car. Instead this book encourages you to leave the car behind and travel instead on foot, by bike or even by boat.

Published by Waterways World, the leading inland waterways magazine, Waterside Pubs is much more than just another pub guide and I challenge anyone reading it not to want to walk the waterways and visit every hostelry featured.

To find out more about this book, read our full review at Waterside Pubs Book Review.

Calling Time on Pubs - Replay of The Money Programme

Calling Time on Pubs - Replay of The Money Programme

If you missed last week's Money Programme special on the pub trade and the demise of the British boozer then you can still catch it on the BBC's iPlayer.

Most people will already know that 5 pubs are closing every day and that publicans have been hit heavily by, amongst other things, the smoking ban and the supermarkets who use cheap alcohol as loss leaders. But even so, the programme gives some additional insight into the lives of a publicans and the strength of feeling about the importance of pubs to our culture.

It was an interesting half hour and anyone who cherishes our pub heritage will want to see it, even if it just galvanises us all to do a little more to support our local community pubs in order to help ensure their survival through this recession.

To see the program on iPlayer follow the link Calling Time on Pubs.

Stonehenge Pub Walk to The Greyhound, Amesbury, Wiltshire

This Week's Pub Walk... past Stonehenge to The Greyhound, Amesbury, Wiltshire

This longer pub walk takes you right past the magnificent Stonehenge site and over National Trust land into Amesbury for your stop at a traditional pub with good value, home cooked food.

The Greyhound serves a good range of home made food with the main courses all under a tenner and many under £7 - an increasing rarity these days. They also offer a choice of vegetarian meals.

Stonehenge is an impressive, awe-inspiring sight and few other pub walks offer such a memorable experience! Managed by English Heritage, much of the land around it is owned by the National Trust and membership of either will give you free access to circle the stones more closely. A Riverside Pub Walk to The Falcon Inn, St Mawgan, Newquay, Cornwall

This Week's Pub Walk... along a Riverside to The Falcon Inn, St Mawgan, Newquay, Cornwall

The Falcon Inn is at the centre of the picturesque village of St Mawgan which is a pretty and traditional Cornish village and very convenient if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Newquay beaches just a few miles away.

The Falcon Inn is a delightful 16th Century wisteria-clad inn. It is built from stone in common with other buildings in the village like the old Post Office and Stores as well as the Antique Shop which it adjoins.

This is a great choice for a pub walk and a real pub-lovers delight, unspoilt with heaps of character and a cobbled courtyard. Typically for the area, it serves the beers of the St Austell brewery including the award-winning Tribute.

It is one of those places that has the winning combination of excellent food and enviable location so it is not surprising to see it in a range of the pub guides including The Good Pub Guide 2008, Eating Out in Pubs 2008 (Michelin Guides) and Pubs and Inns of England and Wales (Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay).

A riverside pub walk to The Cutter Inn, Ely, Cambridgeshire

This Week's Pub Walk... a riverside pub walk to The Cutter Inn, Ely, Cambridgeshire

This circular Cutter Inn pub walk around Ely takes in the cathedral, a stretch of the River Great Ouse and offers a choice of pubs and tea rooms.

This is a gentle stroll along the river bank and then through light woodland back to Ely which should leave you plenty of time to enjoy the second smallest city in England. The cathedral which dominates Ely even offers tours up the Octagon which is definitely worth the climb, finishing with you actually standing on the lead roof!

The Cutter Inn offers an unbeatable riverside location with simple bar food or a full menu in the adjacent dining room. Our recommendation if it is a fine day is to settle for the bar menu and relax on the terrace overlooking the River Great Ouse and gaze at the wildlife, narrowboats and leisure cruisers. Certainly earns its Lucky Dip entry in The Good Pub Guide.

A pub walk from the Royal Standard of England in the small hamlet of Forty Green, Buckinghamshire

This Week's Pub Walk... from the Royal Standard of England in the small hamlet of Forty Green, Buckinghamshire

The Royal Standard of England, a traditional country pub featuring in The Good Pub Guide, is hitting the news again. After its success as a double winner at last year's event, it has now been short-listed in four categories this year for the Publican Food and Drink Awards 2008:

- Food Pub of the Year
- Classic Food Pub of the Year
- Speciality Beer Pub of the Year

Now would be a great time to try one of the Royal Standard of England pub walks as this already excellent contender may well be trying even harder to please - they will need to be ready for surprise visits from The Publican as they select their overall winners for each category.

Forty Green is a small hamlet surrounded by ancient beech woodlands, grazing pasture and quiet country lanes and great birdwatching territory. Combine that with a friendly, award-winning pub and you have perfect ingredients for a great pub walk.

This Week's Pub Walk... around the Broads to The Bear and Bells, Beccles Marsh, Suffolk

The Bear & Bells is 5 minutes from The Quay, adjacent to the bus station, and its welcoming interior and good food have earnined it recognition in the Lucky Dip section of The Good Pub Guide. Plus it has regular guest ales for the real ale lovers too, featuring in The Good Beer Guide..

So now you can once again download for free all our Isle of Wight Pub Walks from now until the Pub Walking Festival ends on 27th October.

So apart from the 47 walking festival walks, you now have 20 pub walks to choose from too! Pub Walk on the Moors to the Dartmoor Inn, Lydford, Devon

Pub Walk on the Moors to the Dartmoor Inn, Lydford, Devon

This is one of our favourite walks on Dartmoor near Lydford which we only discovered by talking to the locals. It offers typical Dartmoor views of tors and open moorland as well as a river that cascades spectacularly when in flood but otherwise has plenty of paddling opportunities. There is also an optional detour to climb the tor known as Widgery Cross.

The Dartmoor Inn is celebrating its 10th anniversary under current management and continues to win accolades from featuring in Eating Out in Pubs (Michelin Guides) to being included in The Observer’s “50 sexiest places to be fed!”

The food can be on the pricey side but in life you get what you pay for and the food is a joy. For this reason you’ll find it in all the other best pub guides too including the AA Pub Guide, The Good Pub Guide and the even more discerning Alastair Sawday’s Special Places series on Pubs and Inns of England and Wales.

When we stopped here, we told the staff that we were short of time and they obliged with fast, efficient and friendly service. Highly recommended.

Red Lion Pub Walk from Hernhill, Faversham, Kent

This Week's Pub Walk... from the Red Lion, a former Wealdon Hall in Hernhill, Faversham, Kent

This walking route in the Faversham area is called The Peasants' Last Revolt and is another one offering a choice of start points from pubs in different villages.

The Red Lion features in both The Good Pub Guide 2008 and AA Pub Guide and was once a Wealdon Hall, built in 1364. Stop for a restoring bar-meal and, if the weather is good, relax outside in the peaceful beer garden with fine views over the countryside. Or if you’re looking for something more substantial, try a meal in the restaurant and dine under the soaring medieval rafters.

This is a walk of variety, from gently rolling countryside, peppered with wildflowers and industriously buzzing bees, to the woodland depths, where civilisation seems far behind you; from wide, expansive views of rolling fields and distant sea, to quiet country villages and narrow forest paths where the trees crowd densely overhead.

Walkers ... Proud of Pubs Week: 13th - 20th July 2008

Sponsored by the Publican trade magazine, Proud of Pubs Week is aimed at showcasing "the fantastic things pubs, licensees and their staff are doing in their communities". It is a chance for all of us to demonstrate our support for our pubs and that we are proud of our pub tradition.

So why not take the opportunity to download a pub walk and visit a pub near you? Even better, why not submit a pub walk for others to enjoy and help your favourite pub generate some new customers?

Many of our pubs need our help to survive and this is one cause where offering that help can be a real pleasure in itself.
