The Royal Standard of England, a traditional country pub featuring in The Good Pub Guide, is hitting the news again. After its success as a double winner at last year's event, it has now been short-listed in four categories this year for the Publican Food and Drink Awards 2008:

- Food Pub of the Year
- Classic Food Pub of the Year
- Speciality Beer Pub of the Year

Now would be a great time to try one of the Royal Standard of England pub walks as this already excellent contender may well be trying even harder to please - they will need to be ready for surprise visits from The Publican as they select their overall winners for each category.

Forty Green is a small hamlet surrounded by ancient beech woodlands, grazing pasture and quiet country lanes and great birdwatching territory. Combine that with a friendly, award-winning pub and you have perfect ingredients for a great pub walk.

I do like to keep an eye open for these competitions targeted at our traditional pub meals. I mentioned in a previous post about the pub walk being nominated as an English Icon. Well, the banger has got to be another good candidate for this title.

The British Pig Executive (BPEX) is running the search for the best pub banger in association with the trade magazine The Publican. To find out more and read about last year’s winner click on Best Pub Pork Sausage Award.

Smoking Ban is now Law in England

Smoking Ban is now law in England

Today the ban on smoking in public places becomes law, coming into line with Wales and Scotland whch went non-smoking on 2 April and 26 March this year respectively.

This is great news for pub walkers, with fresh air now guaranteed inside the pub as well as on our walks! As pubs fear a loss in beer sales, they need to recover this by improving the quality of their food and this is another very positive outcome.

Add to that all the investment pubs are making in improving their outdoor spaces for the benefit of their smoking customers then meals outside may be even more enjoyable too.

CAMRA have conducted an interesting survey on how the new law with affect the public's use of our pubs and a summary of the results can be found at Smoking Ban is now law in England.
